recap: {back cover} becky bloomwood has a fabulous flat in london's trendiest neighborhood, a troupe of glamorous socialite friends, and a closet brimming with the season's must-haves. the only trouble is that she can't actually afford it - not any of it. her job writing as successful savings not only bores her to tears, it doesn't pay much at all. and lately becky's been chased by dismal letters from visa and the endwich bank - letters with large red sums she can't bear to read - and they're getting ever harder to ignore. she tries cutting back; she even tries making more money. but none of her efforts succeeds. becky's only consolation is to buy herself something... just a little something...
finally a story arises that becky actually cares about, and her front-page article catalyzes a chain of events that will transform her life - and the lives of those around her - forever.
review: i've read this book at least 15 times. probably more. it never gets old. i've had the same copy since high school. i read it again this time because mini-shopaholic comes out in paperback in april, and i for some reason like to reread the whole series again before reading the newest installment. (the book has been out in hardcover for awhile, but i much prefer paperbacks. i've been resisting the temptation to buy it for months.) i did not, however, like the movie. well, it was cute, but this is my favorite book of all time, and the movie did not nearly do it justice. for me, one of the best aspects of the book is becky's british charm, and isla fisher was definitely NOT british. also, luke in the book is tall and handsome... in the movie, while he gets points for being british, looks like macauley culkin. (not appealing, sorry.) also, so much of the plot was changed for the movie that they really should have just said it was "loosely based on" the book. next up is shopaholic takes manhattan! i have to stretch out the series a little though; i could easily finish it all in a week but i have to wait until mid-april for mini-shopaholic to come out so i need to make it last.
